I enjoy playing chess here at RHP, not unlike the rest of you. But I positively LOVE the thrill of playing live-action chess at FICS. I'm not talking blitz (I actually don't like blitz -- too fast for me), but slower games, usually 15 minutes in length. The tension is intense, as is the suspense. I'm talkin' thrill-packed adventure. I know many of you also play such venues, but I don't hear much about how much more exciting it is than cc. I often wonder if I am in the majority or the minority with respect to this strong preference for live action. Care to weigh in? What's your pleasure?
Originally posted by bassoFor me the advantage of cc is convenience and flexibility. I work and have a family. Whilst playing a live game requires that I won't be disturbed for the duration of the game, cc can fit around everything else that's going on. So my choice to play cc was more to do with practicalities than preference to start with and now it's become a habit to play here. The thrill packed adventure is just spread out over a larger time frame - good when you're winning!

Originally posted by MahoutWish I felt the same way. I get a mild sense of satisfaction when I am winning -- but no thrills, no tension. And when I win at the end, it's totally anticlimactic, like a dud firecracker. Doesn't seem to add up to much. No thrill in the end, no thrill while playing. (CC is great, however, for learning and going deep into positions . . . and chatting.)

Originally posted by bassoYup, I agree with you, live chess is funnier than CC. CC feels mostly like a matter of how much time you take on each move (if you play against someone at equal strength). Also somtimes when you get home late at night you get the idea of moving, so if the normal strength 1600, it is suddenly 950 for a move.

However, it is two different games with two different purposes/characterists I guess. There is a lot of practice in analysis/CC you can't do OTB or in live internet chess.
