Hello all.
I like to play chess, but am not very good at the game. Would anyone be interested in trying to teach me some things? I'm willing to learn and want to progress in the game! Thank you.

Miss Hope

Hi.

I am not that good myself, but I can offer u some advice that I have received from others.

First thing, u need to lay your hands on some books.

These are the highly recommended books that I keep hearing about. However, some are very expensive and a poor dude like me cannot afford them πŸ˜› It would be best to try to get a copy of these books.

(1) The four books by Yassier Seirawan / Jeremy Silman, published by Microsoft Press.

(2) How to Reassess your chess (both books) by Jeremy Silman

(3) The Amateur's Mind by Jeremy Silman

(4) Chess Tactics Art 3.0 software

(5) Logical Chess: Move by Move

With these, I don't think u can go wrong. The microsoft books cost a lot though.

Start with book (5), its a classic. Then read the first 2 books of the Seirawan series, and keep trying the tactics problems in the CT ART 3.0 software package. Most of the time should be spent on trying out the tactics problems in the CT ART 3.0 software. By the way, I don't have the software myself, 'coz it isn't available here in my country, and buying it thru the net is beyond me now.

For the openings, I suggest playing OPEN games. You may want to look at Fine's book "The ideas behind chess openings" for more details on the individual openings.

As White:
=======
Play e4 always.

Try out the Ruy Lopez Exchange Variation, Scotch Gambit, and King's Gambit. I suggest starting with the King's Gambit.

It is quite probably that u would meet the Sicilian, so it is best to know the Smith Morra.

As Black:
=======
against e4, play e5 [Try the Petroff, Budapest, Falkbeer, 2/4-knights]
against d4, play d5 [Try for Queen's Gambit or Queen's Gambit Declined with e6]
against flank openings: d5 or e5 always.

After doing all these, you really have to ask yourself what you want from chess. The level of play u wish to gain there-after will determine the methods and amount of work you put into studying the game.

Hope it helps πŸ™‚

Slight Correction! The Budapest doesn't have to be ...Ng4 , as black can also play the "fighting Fajarowitz" with ...Ne4. Sorry to interrupt! πŸ˜€

I highly recommend CT Art 3.0 as well. I have a ton of chess books but I feel like I learn much better and faster with the software.

It's (relatively) cheap and it's a 'mentor' that's available all the time... any time.

Good beginning books... (I'm still learning from them).
