Ah, found it. His opponent was Baeta, M, rating under 2000. I rest my case.
His rating is 1998, what is that in FIDE terms? I don't think even in the USCF under 2K is not expert, but class A, another 2 points of course, at least in the USCF and he would bump up to expert. But still, even if he was high expert, 2199 he would clearly not be a challenge for someone 400+
points higher, well in this case 604 points higher. Not exactly an even match. Like me playing a 1200 player, no worse, me playing a 900. (I am 1750 USCF), not exactly a screamer for sure but I clean up on the average player🙂
They are up to round 5 and Meck could only get a draw against someone not even 2300.
Larrea, M, rated 2290 which is his highest rated opponent up to round 5, the rest, much lower. Not 1 player against him even at the 2400 level.

Composition of tournament is like Bay open in 1963 when Fischer won (almost) all games - very "mixed". One could say according the moves of White that he/she is under-expert level.
Other Mecking's opponents weren't extra-class either.
But it is funny that there is

Mecking was considered hidden favorite in both candidates' matches 1974 and 1977, but he was eilminated in 1st round by Korchnoi and Polugavskiy, respectively.
Korchnoi wrote 1977 in his autobiogaphy that Mecking outplayed him but that Brazilian had weaker seconds.
Three years later Mecking again created better positions in one game after another against Poluagevskiy but usually ruined positions in 5th hour.
I liked Mecking's repertoire at the time, he coppycatted Fischer and was only one who dared play Ben Oni at such stage of WC-cycle, whilst other played boring Catalans and QIDs. He had almost won position against Polugaevskiy in Ben Oni game...
In Amsterdam tournament 1978 Mecking played exclusively Fischer's repertoire.
