Sigh. I have to contribute sort of an offbeat combination-that-never-was. I'm about to resign a dead lost game. Game 477672 I burned too much material in an attack against a fianchettoed king that went nowhere. So before I resign, I see a last, kind of beautiful in a swan song sort of a way combination. There's no point, really, except as a last, defiant, tactical swipe.

The combination in question was
25. e4
with the expected, and indeed, only logical continuation
25. ... Bxe4
26. Ne6+, K moves
27. Nc7 (forking the rooks)
Sacrificing a pawn to win the exchange. Now, obviously, this wasn't going to be nearly enough to save the game. I was going to resign, my honor intact, after a last piece of combinational prettiness.
So what does my opponent do? He just #$^@&# GIVES me the exchange for the pawn! 25. ... Rxc5, 26. Rxc5 Bxe4. Same material consequences, but a lot less pretty.
Such is the transience of life. The lotus petals drift away. I feel a haiku coming on in a bit.
But now I'm making him mate me. Even if it takes 80 moves. That's what he gets for taking away my swan song. ðŸ˜

It's not a combination but white moves Nb1a3 on move 11, I presume to stop me taking his last rook. This resulted in a great King chase to my pawn ranks. Game 426348
