Jacob Aagaard, Excelling at Technical Chess has more than the usual amount of prose, and is entertaining. It is not a basic endgame book, however, like Silman's and Seiriwan's and Flear's already mentioned here.

he lives near to me in the same district, if i see him, he is getting challenged! blitz room now my Danish friend! then i shall post my win on you tube, 'guitar playing Patzer beats grandmaster', i shall become famous, write a book, make a film about it and retire.
