Hey guys/girls.I'm intrested in a line of the Philidor defense where black fianchettoes his kingside bishop.Other than the 'normal' lines in the Philidor this line is not so passive and I think it's a good and easy line to learn.Anyway,I'd like to have a closer look into it.Problem is,I have a hard time finding any material on it.All I know so far is that Bent Larsen has played it,and with success too.I would like to know the name of the line (maybe it's called after Larsen?) and where I can find some high level games featuring it.
Anybody know?
Originally posted by T1000He's got it. There is a book by Lane I think, on Phillidor's with a chunk on this line. Best thing to do is to search on chessbase or something for the line. 😀
I think the 4...g6 line to which I'm gussing you're referring to is just known as Philidor's Defence: Larsen's Variation. Not much info around on it.

All the games I looked at look decent for black. It really just resembles a dragon with the c-file closed in trade for the e-file. Black normally plays Nc6 and accepts the two c-pawns for the open b-file, which is nice when white tries all that nasty 0-0-0, Be3, Qd2, quick kingside beatdown stuff. I have 4 games by Larsen, against some really good players of the day: Tal, Byrne, Brown....heavy hitters. Can't be bad at all! The line I would be scared of is the c4 Maroczy Bind type deal. Just my thoughts! 😀
