Looking for a new chess board. I'm trying to spend about $50. I don't care about the case or the issue of mobility (it'll be at my casa). I prefer that the pieces are easily recognizable so that someone who sits down at the board for the first time doesn't have to question their identity. Any ideas? Just PM me or respond to this thread. Thanks!

I have many chess boards, pieces, and themed sets.

My best Staunton set is a very nice furniture quality Rosewood and Boxwood set. (Around $275)

For my board, I went with a House Of Staunton. They seem to be the best, at least to me. You pick the size of the squares and the colors of the squares. I went with Bird's Eye Maple and Striped Ebony on 2 1/2 inch squares. That was about $100.

I don't know if they make a cheaper board or their current prices, but you should check them out.

Also, a friend of mine had a Drueke chess board. It too was pretty nice. It wasn't more than $100 years ago, but I don't know now.

Another idea would be my analysis set.
I bought a Polish Ambassador set about 10 years ago. The squares are 2 1/4 inches, and it even came with pieces. It was around $39.95.
Although I don't use the pieces that it came with (I use a different Rosewood Set.), it is one of my favorite chess boards.
I have placed through at least one game a day on it for 10 years.

If any on this interests you, I will find you some web sites that still sell these.

The best set I've ever seen in terms of recognizability, board clarity and ease of use is the set most tournament organizers go with: the weighted plastic Staunton sets with the large vinyl green and white boards you see at tournaments. Quite inexpensive as well: the sets on this page range from $7 to $70.

These sets are excellent for study and practice, due to their high visibilty and clarity. If you want a nicer set for playing visitors, perhaps a nicer wood set with a wood board is more what you're looking for.

This may sound boring, but I'd suggest buying a standard vinyl roll up board. As Suzianne above has suggested. You can buy a more expensive board if you wish, but you won't play any better on it. 😏
