For those people who enjoyed Bobby Fischer Goes to War, Bobby Fischer's Outrageous Chess Moves, Bobby Fischer Puts His Pants On," etc. etc., a new book out, this time about Magnus Carlsen, the thirteen year old grandmaster, by his trainer Simen Agdestein. This was reported over at Playchess.com. The book is called WonderBoy (is this the best the translator could do?). Fischer couldn't make grandmaster level until he was fifteen, Carlsen beat him by a couple of years. And unlike fischer, this kid appears NORMAL. He loves chess and football (soccer) and doesn't appear to suffer from any paranoia as yet. You can follow his games from major tournaments over the net. He plays exciting chess, as you would expect for a thirteen year old. He hasn't yet learned the art of the short draw. The next Kasparov or just a flash in the pan? YOu decide.

Thanks Buddy!

I believe Carlsen still has a game over at www.chessfm.com too in the videos section. The commentary for the game is provided by another pro, I don't remember who the pro is. Carlsen plays black against Kasparov and whups him with the Sicilian if my memory holds true.

Now that I think about it maybe it was a draw. Oh man my poor brain needs a break.

Anyway, I hope the young man holds up and has a great career.

I searched on chessgames.com and found these games:

http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1279168
http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1279176

Both against Kasparov. First game was a draw, second Kasparov won.

That is what I like about the young ones...they play for the win. Radjadobv looks like he picked up the short draw trick now...too bad....

You say this kid also likes soccer and doesn't suffer from any mental disorders (yet)..... Well this basically means he may never surpass Fischer now! He dedicated every second of his life to chess and now he's a angry, paranoid, hateful old man. If this kid doesn't want all that, then he might as well just give up now! 😉

Who is to define what normal Is? Also, I do believe that Fischer enjoyed playing Tennis as Well.

Not to mention Bowling (remember the quote about Iceland from SfBF)?

Well if he was into bowling and tennis, then that means that he didn't literally give EVERY second of his lif to chess. This surprises me, and I'm sure it probably does a lot of others too.

'Normal' is what the majority thinks/does.Often confused with 'good' or 'correct'

Yes. But something defined as "Good, or Correct" doesn't make it so Always.

And there is a photograph of Fischer and Larry Evans in a swimming pool, so maybe he enjoyed swimming too. Of course, there is that floating chess board there in the pool with them.

Mr. Fischer won the U.S. championship at 14! He played one of the most brilliant games ever at age 13.
