You can try playing on www.gameknot.com as well and analyze database grandmaster games on www.chessgames.com . They're really good sites for reviewing games and playing as well.

1. Buy Fritz 8.
2. Become a member of www.chessgames.com.
3. Become a member of ICC (internet chess club) definitely the best place on the net to play chess.
4. Learn tactics first. Buy Emms The ultimate chess puzzle book and/or go here http://chess.emrald.net/index.php .
5. Find a teacher on ICC. There are lots of strong players which could teach you the basics and help you improve great deal and are not as expensive as titled players.

Fritz has learning program built in, tests you. If you buy fritz, which
may be up to level 9 soon, you get a free ride to chessgames.com.
I play there all the time, under sonhouse there too. I like
three minute and 1 minute, really keeps you jumping.
The ICC is not free, something like 40 bucks a year but it has
tactics robot too. A bit too easy for my taste but for a beginner it
should be great instruction at least in tactics. Both Chessgames.com]
and ICC have grandmasters on all the time.

I think you mean Fritz's 9th iteration (not level) will soon be available. It will give you access to playchess.com (not chessgames.com). If you are playing on playchess you don't need to bother with ICC.

3 0 and 1 0 (minutes first then increment in seconds) are not the way to learn chess. You want to play slower games against opponents who discuss the game and the position during it.

How do you find the learning program built into fritz? I have fritz 8, but have never been able to find any instruction tools.

Long story short:

* Play here. If 6 games are not enough, consider subscribing (very much worth it).
* Visit http://www.princeton.edu/~jedwards/cif/intro.html and http://www.logicalchess.com/. They will keep you busy for a while.
* Get your hands on a few books with tactical puzzles. They are fun to solve, and the quickest way to grasp the game. This site, http://chess.emrald.net/aTacticians.php (posted here recently), will serve as well if you can't afford the book option.
* Avoid www.gameknot.com; it's rubbish.

Chessmaster 10th Edition is another good learning tool, especially Waitzkin's Chess Academy. It will give you a basic understanding of tactics and strategy and allow you to progress rather quickly.

Try Yasser Seirawan's "Winning Chess" series of books. I found them very helpful when I was starting out.

I have to correct you in a few things. You surely meant that one gets a free ride to www.playchess.com.
www.chessgames.com is another site whose members have a very good opening explorer and lots of other things. (but I use opening explorer mostly)
Although 3 minute and 1 minute games can be funny they are certainly not recomended for a begginer.

Regarding ICC, it is currently the best chess club. If for nothing else, there are lots of very strong GMs there, including for example Kamsky, Nakamura, Morozevich... Yes, you have to pay but I think its worth it.

ICC has a robot called TrainingBot and you can set difficulty of problems. There are 7 levels, last one being super hard. In the beggining problems are set to difficulty 1 so these really are easy. Try level 6 or 7 and tell me if you solved any.

Yep, you are correct in that, I always get those confused!
I play ICC and use the trainingbot but did not know there
were settable levels, I kept figuring out the problems so gave up,
have to try again on higher levels. Maybe even level 2🙂
Can you talk about 'opening explorer'? is it openingexplorer.com?
