That's the "solution" I was ashamed of. When king captures your rook it opens a discovered check on your king !

You made it look so effortless, but the discovered check will stop the combination before it bears fruit.
I was thinking it was one of those compositions where some sort of intermediate move was required - like playing Qb6 - that seems to set up a whole bunch of mates which I dont think black can protect against.

With the black king pinned I'm guessing at Nf4 as first move threatening mate with Queen next move?

Yes but can't black protect critical square after 1. Nd4 with 1. ...Nc7 ?

1...Nc7 2.Qf6# I think
It's 1...Rd6 which slows things down on this line.
My brain doesn't seem capable of working this one out without a board 😕

That's a good one.

The main line is:

1 Qa8+ Kg7 2 Bxe5+! Qxe5 (else BxQ) 3 Qh8+! Kxh8 (else QxQ) 4 Nxf7+ and 5 Nxe5 and white is a knight up.

The ending with N+2P v 3P is actually a bit tricky but is a win for white. I wonder if there's something better but the the combo is so neat that this must be the solution, I guess.

The other lines start 1 ..Ke7 2 Qb7+ and then either

2 .. Kf8 3 Qxf7 mate
2 .. Ke8 3 Qxf7+ Kd8 4 Ne6+ Kc8 and then the low calc way is Qf8+ taking the queens off two pieces up
2 .. Qd7 white swaps queens and takes the rook - two pieces up
2 .. Kd8 3 Nxf7+ and 4 NxQ

Is it a real game?
