Nah, certain players still get away with it.

There is one whose lowest rating is under 1200 but rose to just under 1400 for over 8 months then suddenly shot up to 1900+ over the next 5 months, then over the next year and a bit rose to 2100 and is now over 2250.

Despite being reported they are still here.
Sometimes it just clicks for some players and they suddenly become 2200+ mere months after playing games like this one: Game 3279565.

Maybe its a different person? The profile says, "In honor of Derek." Perhaps this Derek fellow met an untimely end and a family member took over the account.

Those types usually end up getting booted in the end - it is just because there will be a mix of really terrible gameplay that will skew the checking system for a while, it is only in their last few months that the engines show themselves.

Why bother with the game checking? Just look at the graphs. Check back to the quality of the earlier, lower-rated, games; then check a few of the games after the sudden upward shift. Any experienced player can spot an engine-user a mile off. The difference in quality is obvious. I'm playing at least seven in my current playlist. Some are laughably blatant.

A) You can't "take over an account" according to the site rules;

B) I'm pretty positive the comment is referring to derek9037 (http://www.redhotpawn.com/profile/playerprofile.php?uid=45681), a long time Metallica member who left the site a year ago.

Interesting! So either way its probable that account is less than savory.

some people might start cheating right away, especially banned cheaters who come back.

pretty sure it's NOT just how steep your graph is.. in your case it's been over the course of 4 years, showing steady and consistent (and plausible) improvement of the game

... but cheaters still here and they win a lot of tournaments. Their chess knowledge&understanding very poor, sometimes they makes stupid unhuman moves, but in tactics they are much better than Kasparov 🙁

Although a jump in rating is grounds for suspicion it does not constitute proof. The method for detecting cheats is to look for engine match up rates which are significantly higher than those strong non-engine using players reach. No one should be banned solely on the grounds that they have a "funny graph". the youngest players on this site are 13 and you can get immensely quick improvement from kids. Which may appear to occur over the space of a few games, but a few games can take ages since this is a correspondence site.

Yes, certainly kids can improve quickly - from 1100 to 1700 over a year. After that it takes effort and study. Over 2000, you need to be well-tutored; over 2250, very well-tutored.

But I'm talking graphs where guys play several months in a range, say 1700-1800, then suddenly take off and three months later are playing in a 2200+ range. That does not happen unassisted, never ever, not on this planet.

Then there is the player - and I'm currently playng one - who climbs relentlessly and steeply to 2300 and then accelerates upwards. Get real!

I could go on. The graphs make the prima facie case for many players. Start there, and then do some digging.

Has something to do with the whacky rating system that is used on here too.

any of your graph scenarios could happen for someone who first blitzed all his games, and then at some point decided to play proper CC.

That is a standard cheater defense.
