Anyway, i've always thought that small time coffee shops (ie not Starbucks or Seattle's best) are an ideal place for a few games of chess.

Seattle's worst has shops? Glad I haven't been in those.
A couple of us in Spokane are talking about turning the Rocket downtown into a chess cafe.
