If I'm playing black and he goes d4 what's the best way to defend that? I've tried Scandanavian but he pushes his e4 pwn as well and now I'm in a hole.

Scandanavian is a defense against 1)e4 not d4.

Hmmm.

My post just got bounced by the profanity checker for what I consider to be a very tame word.

Anyhoo, in short, there is no one best way to answer 1. d4. If there was chess would be a very dull game. It all comes down to personal taste and style.

My personal prefernce is 1. ... e6 (very flexible) or 1. ... d5. Occasionally if I'm feeling frisky I might play 1. ... Nf6

You have a range of options, hence you will get a range of answers.
If I told you that nearly 3 in 4 grandmaster games reply to d4 with Nf6, you might get the best start point. The aim is to prevent white getting both pawns in the centre by preventing e4 next. You can go any number of ways from here.
