most openings that i have a knowledge of are for white. i can play against them as black and get to fairly even positions

i would like to now start learning a few black openings

I'm thinking the scandanavian with 2.nf6 against e4 openings

been trying the kid aganst d4

I'm an attack minded player normally, willing to play gambits if the inititive is worth it

I don't want to get bogged down in lots of theory, i'd prefer to learn the general ideas, play the opening a bit, and then learn some more detailed lines after i have a feel for the opening.

any recomendations?

Well, the KID is a good choice for ideas, and for attacking players, but there is some theoretical work involved there too, and you can use the Icelandic gambit, as it fits in with the Scandivian and your attacking style, although again, some theory has to be learned. There is no way to completely know an opening without knowing the lines. 😀

I often play, as Black, the Scandinavian, but not the Nf6-line, in which I don't feel very comfortable. So, 2.Qxd5, etc.
(John Emms' 'The Scandinavian' is a great book. Pity most books don't mention what to do when your opponent doesn't play 2.exd5!).

I also like to play the Alekhine Defence.
(Burgess' 'The Complete Alekhine' is a fine starter.)

2 very good books are by Eric Schiller:
* Complete Defense against King's pawn Openings (based on the Caro-Kann)
* Complete Defense against Queen Pawn Openings (based on the Tarrasch)

Eric Schiller is often not to be trusted, but these two books were very well received by critical and independant reviewers, among them John Watson and Jeremy Silman.

Advice: Never buy a book unless you've searched for independant & professional reviews on it? Never believe the sales talk of bookstores and publishers!

Hi villa68! Against 1.e4 you can try a lot of openings for black that will suit your attacking style. Both players have a chance to transpose the opening. I suggest you use sicilian against e4. So, to minimize your problems, you have to study the openings that are related. if you play taimanov then you should be familiar with Kan as well, and possibly Scheveningen. but then again, scheveningen is connected with najdorf. against d4 you could try the slav or the cambridge springs variation, and the botvinnik variation of the semi slav. they are fairly related to each other,🙂

I would not start copying their moves because you would never see what their next move would be. so i start with moving the king's pawn forward 2 spaces.(predictable)🙂😀😛😴

You can never see what your opponents next move is going to be anyway!

There are times when you can predict an opponents move.Sometimes even up to the last move especially after an opening move has been established. Moreover, if the middle game or the continuation are quite predictable.Say it has been played over and over.😲

Well, you might be playing yourself. Or playing a non-randomised computer that you have played before. Or have a prior agreed game plan. Or have the opp in a position where he only has 1 move he can legally play.

Are you dead yet?. 🙂

Nobody here plays the French Defense? I thought that was a fairly common response to e4. I'm experimenting with it now, traditionally I've stuck with the Sicilian (dragon, primarily) and the KID but I'm trying to branch out a bit.
