what would be the greatest opening of all time...i mnow this is mainly an oppiniative question but...still ild like 2 know what u think...whilest im forming my oppinion!!!!
Queens Open
Kings Open
Ruy Lopez
Giuoco Piano
4 Knights
Saragossa
Kings Indian Defense
They are the ones I kind of know and can go 3 or so moves deep by memory... I know more but forget the names. List goes on.
Saragossa
Bird open
Reti
Grob
Holoween
Stonewall
These are new ones I am picking up.... or don't like.
Other than that learn good "control the center" ideas and you will find you do book opens just because you are getting better. I think modern chess has learned that King pawn opens are not the strongest, but strong players can still beat you with it.
Middle game is important, have all your pieces ready and don't waste moves in the open.
Endgame is really really important...
Learn to march your pawns.
Learn how to mate with just a rook and King.
Learn to mate with bishops, or bishop and knight...
(I can't do it forced yet... perhaps you can.)
Most of all... Have fun!

Well, Sokolsky claims that it is "in no way a violation of any opening principle," but I suppose that depends on what you consider to be (sound) opening principles! I believe it is weaker than the standard openings, but only objectively 😉
you should learn it if you like that move
I'm working on it! 🙂

Because of this (bad example, but it's something), the Polish is just some opening that looks nice, but is worth nothing to me, no center control at all, and a bad development!😕

While inferior, however, 1.b4 is not as bad as it looks. White in Game 242631 made worse mistakes in the opening than 1.b4
He failed to modify his opening plan after 1...Nc6, and in the first four moves we find gross tactical failure. I didn't examine the whole game, but I can tell you that it doesn't do justice to the Polish (Orangutan, Sokolsky, Bugayev, whatever -- that's why I just call it 1.b4 🙂 ).
I'm no expert on the opening in question (or on any opening, or on anything else) but it's not worthless in general (although of course it may be worthless to a particular player). To paraphrase a stronger player than me, "The middle-game has something to do with the outcome of a chess game. Most games aren't won in the first eight or nine moves." Let alone the first four 🙂
In a previous post in this thread I said the move 1.b4 is inferior, but only objectively. What you can get from it, if you're familiar with it and have a plan for it, is a position in which you're comfortable while often you're opponent is not (since many aren't familiar with 1.b4)
At any rate, it doesn't lose by force. My favorite opponent is the one who trys to show that it does.
Disclaimer: I'm a patzer. Anything I say about openings or chess in general might be hogwash.
