It's all about flexibility - if you've got two extra pieces protecting/influencing a crucial point, then all the pieces engaged in that duty are free to do other things while still holding the point.

Am I doing something wrong? I can read the blog and commentary and see the board, but no pieces. There is a flashing pattern on d4-d5-e4-e5.
