4. b4 a5
5. a3 ????
I get this everytime i play as black against this guy at my chess club. I can beat him, we are maybe even, but he always pushes the damn c5 on move 3.... I know that he shouldn't play that cause its cr@p but what can i do? its so annoying!
Thanks in advance

Better yet, try out the Albin Counter Gambit 2. ... e5 3. dxe5 d4 4. nf3 nc6 5. g3 f6 and then you stick that d pawn down his throat and wang up the h pawn. I like it!

in possitions like that whit whites pawn on c5 your strategy should be to play e5. But not right away, first develope you pieces around it and than play e5 at the right time. Of course after a3 black wins as mentioned above. But this is the right strategy for possitions whit this pawn structure in general. If black does not play e5 at some time he will get into a passive and cramped possition.
Originally posted by LordOfTheChessboardCouldnt explain better!. black's e5 is to undermine the "backward" d pawn. When white's d pawn goes, the c5 will soon go.

Suggested setup can be Re8, Nc6, Qc7, If still white manages to bring in enough defenses, black can play Nfd7 and then e5!!.
With this setup (after exchange on e5 or d4) black gets open /semi open e file, control of d4 & b4 squares, then defending c5 and the game is very difficult.
