Oh yes, I'd completely forgotten that there's already been a film made about Sultan Khan. Here is the climax to that famous scene where Capablanca (played, rather incongruously, by William Shatner) is forced to resign after failing to hold on in a marathon two rooks vs queen ending (Hastings, 1930).

"The Luzhin Defence is a 2000 film directed by Marleen Gorris, starring John Turturro and Emily Watson. The film centres on a mentally tormented chess grandmaster and the young woman he meets while competing at a world-class tournament in Italy. The screenplay was based on the novel The Defense (or The Luzhin Defence) by Vladimir Nabokov."
I enjoyed it. I don't particularly care for Fischer's part, but I have been lucky enough to have had dinner with Spassky and played him in a simul. Schreiber's portrayal of Spassky is excellent.
