Hey, I played a game recently with an odd pawn structure and ended up winning on a blunder by white... tell me what you would have done differently for your first move or instead of 3... b5 or 22... Rxd2 (my other option here was 22... Bf7) ... and also, what should white have done differently in the opening?

I think White should have won after 9.Qxd8+ Kxd8 10.Nf7+

I guess 2.. d5 woulda been better.

2..c5 is ok, It seems like ..f5 and the subsequent ..h5 were just bad.

1). too many pawn moves, too few peices....

remember...everytime you move a pawn you create a "hole" in your defense....something which white took adavantage of..

10 Rh6....

rooks work well on Open files...Squares like E1, or E8 for black...H6 is not a good Rook square...what does it do? when the Knight moves away it has no purpose to be there for....so at some point you will have to move it back (e4)

...Rg8 was probably better

13...Qd8?

you develop a peice then un-develop it?

a waste of a move...

Instead, I think a6 is better, planning to get the knight out of the way so you can 0-0-0 safely.....

14. Bxd6 Qxd6 Qe7....

Why not trade a good knight for a bad bishop?

as for the rest of the game, I think Black was lucky to win

13... a6 and 14 Nc7+, winning a rook... 13... Rc8 and 14 Nd6, again winning the rook... I saw no way around it... now, 12... a6 woulda been better, I didn't see that unfortunatley.

14. Bxd6 ... yes, that may habe been better... but then again, this is when I realized white had a weakness and I would not have been able to exploit the weakness in whites king side unless I was able to push his knight away and get my queen into position, and I knew he would take my bishop and that I would be able to take back the knight... and then, with my queen on the diagonal I can threaten his weak spot, so he should have castled on move 18 in which case I would attempt to pawn storm... which may or may not have worked.

Anyway, this was my rationale.. but I was lucky to get that far.

1. d4 e6 is fine. If your opponent responds with 2. e4 then play 2. d5 entering a French. If your opponent plays c4 then you can choose from 2. d5 (Queen's Gambit Declined) and Nf6 (Nimzo/Queen Indian Systems).
