It's different - it's not correspondence chess. Personally I only use Playchess to watch games (sometimes with commentary) because I prefer slow games. So I don't have a subscription either, although I have bought some "ducats", the money on Playchess which you can for example use to see a professional commentary for tournaments (usually by Yasser Seirawan, who is great - it's definitely worth paying something for his commentaries) or to get lessons. A little warning though, I was rather disappointed and annoyed when I found out (
after buying ducats) that you can't use your ducats for live commentary unless you are a subscriber (luckily they get archived, and archived commentaries are available for ducats to non-subscribers, too). And if you are a subscriber, you still have to pay ducats for these things.
