Originally posted by EmLaskerBoth ratings are accurate. They have nothing to do with each other, only with the type of Chess you happen to be playing there and the pool of players that you are playing with.
when i play chess on that site, my rating is under 1200!
which rating is more accurate? my 1500 on here or the 1180 on that site?
because players on that site are EXTREMELY competent which i find.
Originally posted by EmLaskerit could be all about the time control you choose to play there. If I had played all my games at 20' time control at FICS, my guess is my rating would be at least 150 points lower, because I'm simply terrible at rapid chess, not to mention blitz of course.

I also have noticed that on almost all chess servers, people are so used to playing blitz that on slow time controls they can't help blitzing the whole game, or at least using their time unwisely.
A few days ago I had a game at fics with 60' 30'' in which at the end of the game I had less than 30 seconds where my opponent had more than 1 hour! and if he hadn't blitzed the last 5 moves, but had taken at least 2 minutes on each one, it would be a very trivial win for him. But he kept blitzing and lost, and with a humiliating mate I could say.
Originally posted by diskamylI've gotten a couple of immediate rematch request after blitz, but with standard time control. once I got a 1.f4 f5, blitzed it away, and at around move 20 with a won but complicated position realized the guy had sent a standard challenge. I didn't have the time to play it (accepting the rematch was more like "okay, one more 5/0, but lets make it quick because I gotta go" ), so I blitzed the rest as well, and lost. the guy moved slow from move 1, and I first thought it was because 1.f4, but looking back it was of course deliberate. - I should of course have paid more attention to the challenge, but still, can't help but feeling a bit cheated about it.

Originally posted by tomtom232I was at 1400s for a while, topping at about 1470 I think, then I pretty much stopped caring and now fool around at 1300s mostly. drunk, tired, watching tv at the same time, it doesn't matter. I just play and ignore the rating. haven't blitzed for a while now though...

Originally posted by EmLaskerI think you'll find that playchess.com ratings are about as accurate as an online site can be. There is a very large base of players and the provisional system they employ gets new accounts close to their correct rating very quickly. Playchess.com also goes to great lengths to keep the server secure and maintain the integrity of the rating pool.

Of course there is no substitute for an OTB tournament rating.
