I give advice on here for free...for real lessons I run $25 a
lesson...which is very cheap for a NM. Most IM's and GM's charge
anywhere from $80 - $150 an hour.

Hi Dave! I've just had a look at the Kasparov Chess Club and found
the following rates for private lessons of 1 hour each...
* GM Boris Alterman: 1 hr = $50 - 5 hrs = $235 - 10 hrs = $450
* GM Susan Polgar: 1 hr = $50 - 10 hrs = 450 (lst 2 hrs $50)
* GM Viktor Mikhalevski: 1 hr = $40 - 5 hrs = $190 - 10 hrs = $360
* GM Lev Psakhis: 1 hr = $50 - 5 hrs = $235 - 10 hrs = $450
* IM Andrew Sokolov: 1 hr = $30 - 5 hrs = $135 - 10 hrs = $240
I can't afford such rates, but they don't fit the rates youn mention.

These are pre programmed lessons...I can't believe Susan has
degraded herself to that.

No Dave, I had one hour lesson from GM Victor Mikhalevski on line,
and it's not pre-programmed. Je commented on my moves, showed
the better ones and wrote me also WHY and WHERE I was making
mistakes, giving me the better moves. This was personal and not pre-
programmed. I don't know about susan and the others. Jan

You could both be right.
On line, a Master can have ten or twenty lessons going at once, you,
the lesson taker, would never be the wiser, so he could be making
200 to 1000 dollars an hour total, depending on rates. Works out well
for everyone; you get a private lesson, the instructor gets to fill his
time efficiently, and rake in more cash than with private in person
lessons.

Would I be right in assuming that lessons in person are probably
more expensive since you are expecting the "full attention" of your
teacher? I assume people won't pay as much per hour for a
group/classroom lesson as they do for private tutoring.

I doubt it very much that Mikhalevski was giving 'simul'-lessons. We
were chatting all the time through the one-hour lesson. He answered
my remarks/questions within seconds, like you're chatting on the Web.
I don't know about rates in classrooms. I can try to find out at Susan
Polgars Chess School in NY. Give me some time. Jan

Thanks for the advice. I read the reply thread to this post, and I have
a few questions:
Who is your coach?
Are you coached online or in person?
How much does it cost, if you can divulge?
And, how can your coach be contacted?
I believe the answers to my questions will help anyone who has
interest in starting a relationship with a coach who is tried and true.

My chess coach is the great Sintubin #1 player on this site;
Such is the beauty of the game and with the technological advances
he can teach me while i lay in bed.
Oh the wonders of a laptop
