4. ... h3 instead wins for Black, but the sac on g3 with the intention of following it up with Rxg3 (which fails miserably because White's queen covers h8) was the first thing I saw.

Agreed.Though h3 isn't hard to see one must try every trick.Probably the shock of Qf3 had something to do with the resignation.
In your line the queen also covers g3 so there's no rook sac at all.Did you mean this?
