Thought I'd put this game through the mangle and see what we can squeeze out of it.
First the actual game, then two what-might-have -happened.

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 d6 3. Nc3 Qf6 4. Be2 Nh6 5. h3 {Waste of time. Bg4 was not a threat and if Ng4 then h3 with tempo. 5.d4 open up ther game.} 5... Nc6 6. a3 {Another waste of time. 6.d4 exd4 7.Nd5 White is looking very good.} 6... Nd4 {This is bad. 6...Be6 and thanks to h3 and a3 Black is looking OK.} 7. Nxd4 exd4 8. Nd5 Qg5 {Black is mounting up the errors. 8...Qd8 had to be played here.} 9. Nxc7+ {By allowing this the game is practically over.} 9... Kd8 10. Nxa8 Qxg2 11. Bf3 Qg5 12. d3 Qg6 13. Bf4 {This and the next few moves are OK. Calmy tucking the King away before continuing.} 13... b6 14. Qd2 Bb7 15. Nxb6 {That was good weakening b6 for a knight already lost.} 15... axb6 16. O-O-O Qe6 {Don't allow the Black Queen onto a2 with Qa1 mate.} 17. Qb4 {Good nibbling at a weakness.} 17... d5 18. exd5 {A mistake. Black can take on b4 because after exf6 Black has Bxf3 and is back in the game.} 18... Bxd5 {Black missed it. Now 19.Qxd5 wins another piece for WHite.} 19. Bxd5 {White missed it though no real harm done. White now wraps up the game.} 19... Qxd5 20. Qxb6+ Ke8 21. Rde1+ Be7 22. Bd6 Nf5 {It's lost in all variations. 22...Qg5+ 23.f4.} 23. Qb8+ Kd7 24. Qc7+ Ke8 25. Qc8
A couple of ideas and variations.

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 d6 3. Nc3 Qf6 {That is not very good. Nd5 and Queen has to go back to d8. But do not play it now. Save up that threat.} 4. Be2 {That is OK. I can never argue with a developing move.} 4... Nh6 {This clumsy way of developing is the result of Black's Move. White now played 5.h3 which is pointless, How about.} 5. d4 {Pressure the centre brings the c1 Bishop into the game with Bg5 ideas.} 5... exd4 {With this plausible capture we show the mess Black is in.} 6. Bg5 Qg6 {We will look at Qe6 next game.} 7. Nd5 {Now the Queen no longer covers c7 this threat has real venom.} 7... Kd7 8. Qxd4 {White has a dream position. The threat is 9. Ne5+ dxe5 10.Nb6 double check and mate in a few.} 8... Nc6 9. Bb5 a6 10. Bxc6+ {10. Ne5+ forking King and Queen also works. I am going this way for effect.} 10... bxc6 {10...Kxc6 11.Qc3+ Kd7 12.Qxc7+ mates. as does 11.Qc3+ Kb5 12.a4+} 11. Ne5+ {Forking the King and hapless Queen.} 11...dxe5 12. Nb6+ {Double Check} 12... Ke6 {12...Ke8 13.Qd8 mate.} 13. Qc4+ Kd6 14. O-O-O {Checkmate.}
These cute variations are not the sole preserve of the GM's. they are in our games .

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 d6 3. Nc3 Qf6 4. Be2 Nh6 5. d4 exd4 6. Bg5 {Last time the Queen went to g6} 6... Qe6 7. Nd5 {Now Nxc7+ really is a threat. It's a Royal Fork, King, Queen and Rook.} 7... Qd7 {To defend c7 but Knights on d5 can check on other squares.} 8. Bxh6 {Black cannot take back. 8...gxh6 9.Nf6+ forking King and Queen.} 8... c6 {The chances are Black would have played gxh6. This is more tricky.} 9. Qxd4 {Threatening Bxg7} 9... Rg8 {Now White has two pieces hanging. In such cases try and look for any reason to keep them hanging.} 10. Ne5 {Now you have three pieces hanging.} 10... dxe5 11. Qxe5+ Kd8 {11...Be7 12.Nc7+} 12. O-O-O {12.Bg5+ is OK. But I want to show how to bring everyone to the party.} 12... cxd5 13. Bg5+ f6 14. Rxd5 fxg5 {Black is going to lose their Queen and tries to sell for as much material as possible.} 15. Rhd1 {There is no rush.} 15... Nc6 {What else?} 16. Rxd7+ Bxd7 17. Qe6 {Winning the house.} 17... Kc7 18. Rxd7+ Kb6 19. Qxg8
