Originally posted by c guy1After 2... d6, white can play the same idea (3. Bc4, Nb6 4 Bxf7+), with about the same effect. This is an old, trappy variation. It doesn't work, as the original poster pointed out, but its not bad and will catch a lot of unprepared players.
should have played 2....d6....no wonder he lost
I think one of the biggest pains for Alekhine players ( or at least it was years ago) is the Exchange Variation.
1.e4 Nf6 2.e5 Nd5 3.d4 d6 4.c4 Nb6 5.exd6 !?
A. 5. ... exd6 is symmetrical. Although the structure is drawish there is plenty of play left. Black can remain under a little pressure for quite some time.
B. 5. ... cxd6 is the other way to go. This line was giving black a little trouble around MCO-14 (+=)
I forget the exact move order, but white plays Nc3,Be3,b3,Rc1,Nf3, and Be2. It can be really hard for black to get counterplay. This setup works against 5. ... exd6 and 5. ... cxd6.
For the risk takers among you, 1.e4 Nf6 2.Nc3 d5 3.e4 is the Blackmar-Diemer/Hubsch Gambit (depending on 3. ... dxe4 or 3. ... Nxe4). I've had quite a bit of trouble with the Hubsch as white lately.
There are at least two systems that give white considerable pain.
Oh yeah, how about the 1 minute gambit I love.
4. ... a5 may be better
The play is insane. It's just what a 1 minute hustler needs. 🙂

Can't believe nobody has noted this
2. ... d6 3.exf6 !
I think everyone means 3. ... d6.
Against 3... Nc6, if the king went back to g8 after the knight check, black would be fine.
7...Nxe5 is really good for black since white needs to keep his Queen on the f file (that's why after Qe4+ the best move is KxN). SO this sac shouldnt be played against 3...Nc6, I just realize that after further analysis. Anyway, it was fun.
I tried this after seeing this excelent video, "how to beat Alekhine's defence" by petrovitch
This sac leads to very complicated positions for black when 3...d6. (1.e4 Nf6, 2.e5 Nd5, 3. Nf3 d6, 4. Bc4 Nb6, 5. Bxf7+ )
black has how to escape, but it's not so simple.
here's the video:
