In two of my dozen games here, White has chosen to bring the queen out on the second move:

1 e4, e5; 2 Qf3.

What is this opening called? What is the best second move for Black?

It's called Napoleon's opening, it's no good, the last time he used it was Waterloo 1815.

.
It's actually been used more recently than that... however, it was renamed... "Custer's Opening 1876".

Which games are they, Paul? Are they still going on?

Perhaps we should wait until those game are completed before discussing in depth.

Game 1144722
Game 553190

The second one is over. The first is ongoing but is probably well past the stage where any commentary would be useful. I'm not sure if commentary would be appropriate or not.

Thanks for linking to the games. The ongoing game is at move 18, so I wouldn't be able to use any opening information at this point in that game, but still I suppose it might be best to wait until that game is over. I may bump this thread at that time.

The fat lady sang. Game over.

The best thing I could think of was to also violate principle and bring my own queen out early with 2... Qf6. That way, the queens are in contact on a file, and if my opponent wants to initiate a swap of queens, I use it as an opportunity to bring my knight out to f6.

But probably there is a better move 2 for Black. 😕

Napoleon played 2 Qf3 against the Turk automaton in 1809 and lost after 2 ...Nc6.

So it really is called Napoleon's Opening? Thanks for the move 2 suggestion.

I think most new players try to go for the 3 move mate with this, and don't really know how to play it..

Ah yes, I see--White would get his bishop to c4, attacking the king's bishop pawn a second time. I was blissfully unaware that White in both cases was probably aiming for a quick mate.

Wellll ...
It's just refered to as a King Pawn opening on that site.
Maybe it's too bad to be honoured with a name, at least "officialy"

I looked it up on a database and it said : king's pawn, napoleon opening.

Just go for simple development as Black. ...Nf6 is good, but ...Nc6 is fine, as are other simple developing moves. With some basic tactical awareness on Black's part White's opening doesn't accomplish much. Instead it takes away a useful post for his King's Knight.
