Recently in a school team tournament, I played on board five as black, against someone a year above me. The other team were notorious for playing 1.d4 so I had prepared thoroughly to play a Queen's Gambit Declined. This is the game.
1. d4 d5
2. c4 e6
3. Nc3 Nf6
4. Nf3 Nbd7
5. Bg5 Be7 [5..Bg4] gets the better results in my database.]
6. e3 O-O
7. h3 b6
8. Be2 dxc4
9. Bxf6 Nxf6
10. Bxc4 Bb7
11. Be2 c5
12. O-O Rc8
13. Qd2 Ne4
14. Qc2 cxd4
15. Nxe4?? At this point my opponent blundered, thinking "Oh, a free piece". The rest of the game has been omitted.
I was wondering, how well would you say I played? Any critique on my positional play is especially welcome.
I'll look it over, I personally LOVE queen's declined as black so I will greatly enjoy looking it over.
EDIT:"[..Bg4] gets better? can't play that...I think you ment to say b4 but o well.
All in all, pretty good, I like a slightly more open position (yours was too crowded I think) I like that you knew to capture d4 when the bishop moved, made him waiste a tempo.
I personally dont care for Nf6, I think pinning the knight would have worked better....especially when white tries to check you with queen, then Night Nf6 defends Bishop, blocks check, and attacks the weakend d4 pawn. Nf6 could always come later, or maybe even Nge7 if you dont like having your kights super exposed. But when he gave you the chance for a stab at intiative with Nf3, you definantly should have pinned the "c" knight.
I liked that you created the cannon on the open C file with your rook, obviously it led to a free queen. Also the fiencheto with your light bishop was good, seeing how hard it is to get play with it you defininantly made the best of it.
I'll post more later, got to go to school.
All in all I like the game

Yes, I was glad to be able to play ..b6 after h3. Normally Black doesn't have the time this early in the QGD to fianchetto the light bishop, but seeing as White wasted a move with h3, I thought why not. I wonder if I should have played ...c5 a move earlier.
About playing Nbd7, I understand now that Bb4 would have been better but seeing as I don't know the line I decided to just transpose into the Orthodox Defence that I know quite well. I find that sticking to what I know gives a boost to my confidence over the board.
EDIT: In the first post the note after move 5 should say Bb4, not Bg4.
Originally posted by masscatI had a look at the Tchigorin, but I prefer the QGD, it suits my slow style more.
The Chigorin Defense is a pretty scrappy, and better than it's reputation, if you want to get them out of their book knowledge quickly. It results in a lot of direct piece play in the center.
