ok here is the scenario:

away to lose two games at around the same time; one against a player with a far lower rating (150ish points less) and one against a player marginally higher (10 points higher) than my own rating. i know that im gonna lose, there is very little chance of a draw in either case.

will it make any difference to my eventual rating which order i resign the games in? I know it will make a difference to my opponents (i.e. the one i resign first gets the better deal)... but considering that I will lose less on the second loss (since my rating is less than it was) does it even out?

i am asking because i know the lower rated player in person and would like to give him a higher boost (by resigning in his games before the other) but will this cost me more in the long run?

I know the FAQ page has the ratings calculation and i could sit to take the time to figure it all out but wondered if anyone knew the answer already in general terms and could save me doing the calculating.

for you, it's a tiny little bit better to resign as early as possible.

for the opponent, around +-25 pts difference in your rating gives him +- one point. so, if you lose 25 pts or more, the next resignation gives your opponent 1 point more. 25 points means you're losing against someone 200 points weaker than yourself. roughly.

thanks wormwood but whilst waiting on an answer i have gone away and done the calculations and in this case it doesn't appear to make any difference which order i resign them in. of course this is only if the calulations are rounded to the nearest number. if they are always rounded up or are always rounded down then there is a difference of a single point.

not enough to worry about really so ill let the weaker player get the advantage.

cheers
