Okay, I know that as long as I'm still provisionally rated, the system is strange... but I just lost 28 points... with a win! (and a decisive win, at that). In fact, my rating has gone from 1478 to 1434 with the ending of my last two games... and they were both wins.

Sheesh! Any 2200 players wanna let me resign to them so I can bring my rating to 1600?

j/k 🙂

So let me ask you this: 2 players start out. One player goes 10-0 against a bunch of 1000 rated players. Te other goes 0-10 against a bunch of 2000 rated players. Who will be rated higher?

Rating manipulation is against the rules.

according to the FAQ for provisional players

the 0-10 against 2000 average will be 1600
10-0 against 1000 average will be 1400.

And this makes sense... how exactly? 🙂

Is it not true, that while you are a provisional, one of the factors taken into consideration is the average rating of your opponent? If so, you may acheive a rating of 1400 by beating some 1200's and 1300's but if you keep playing the 1200's and 1100's they will bring down the average rating of your total opponents and your rating along with them, even if you win. The solution, of course, is to play someone with a rating equal, better, or only slightly below yours until you get your 20 in. Roger Federer is the number one ranked tennis player (I think) but if he never played any other ranked players again he would soon drop down even if he won every match.

Ratings are unreliable while provisional, and generally do not offer an accurate assessment of your playing strength until you have wins and losses. Ten games mean nothing.
