Ok, my ratings not what it was, but i've noticed something rather strange about some peoples charts. As is often the case, i've played a lot of people around the same level, ie about 1550-1650. Quite a lot of them i've played more than once and i've noticed that even though i have a plus score against some, they still out rate me more often than not. Now im not accussing anyone of cheating or anything, but it puzzles me. Most of them play more games than me as well, which just deepens the mystery, as from my own experience, more games means less thought.

I find this disturbing. Either they are improving much faster than me, which is of course totally possible, or there is something i am doing consistently wrong. I guess i should end this with a question (and try and salvage some kind of point to this post) How would you all go about locating your weaknesses and eliminating them? I've found i generally loose when i become over confident in attack, but how exactly i rectify this i don't really know. Any thoughts? Anyone know what im talking about with frequent opponents ratings? 🙂

See my post on timeouts. I imagine there are many players who play me, look at my rating, and think, "This guy is not as good as he thinks!" Timeouts may have a lot to do with it.

Hmm, i think your right. I have a heap of timeouts against me, at least 20 out of my first 200 games.

You can boost your rating by feeding on losts of low rated players. That's probably what's happening. These guys are probably actually not as good as you, but play lots of games against people a little weaker than them - not necessarily on purpose - they keep winning, and their rating climbs above what it should be.

Though of course your right, it is possible to do this, in practise it doesn't work out to be that easy to do, as any loss hits you really hard. I win about 60-65% of my games, but it's not the wins that determin my rating really, it's the losses. A player who only plays higher rated players will remain about the same rating as even if they loose to some of those players, as they start more challenges, the ratings of these 'higher rated players' goes down, if you see what i mean. A balance is always reached.

I've tried both ways and my rating was higher when i selected higher rated opponents exclusively over weaker players (this judgement being made primarily by ratings of course).

My game is totally inconsistent at the minute. I have improved steadily since I started playing on RHP a couple of years back but I find that I go for weeks at a time without playing well then seem to have a few weeks of playing brilliantly.

Alas at the moment I am in a real trough, with my blitz game as well <sigh>. I think it might be because I am playing kings pawn openings after neglecting them for a year and I far prefer queens pawn openings. Its painfull! :'(

Does your rating go higher if you beat a higher rated player? Or is a win a win?
