The latest Private Eye (British satire mag) has a piece on
Raymond Keene who has been caught (apparently) lifting other
people words again.

Last time this happened his publisher had to pay $3,000 compensation.

This time he (apparently) nicked the words of Edward Winter.

They state he [R.K.] bears an unccany resemblance to Batman's arch-enemy.

The Penguin

I will of course will pilch the entire article and drop it on The Corner tonight.

(just noticed left e out of Keene - cannot correct it )

I was almost embarrassed to quote--even with attribution--some words by Raymond Keene when I was writing about the Brain Games World Chess Championship a few days ago during the Kramnik-Anand match. Keene wrote much of the official tournament book for the 2000 WCC, as well as many other WCCs.

Keene was once a pretty keen chess player and even wrote one good book back in the day. His descent into plagiarism seems like an unnecessary tragedy. Plagiarizing Edward Winter is just stupid, however. Winter and hundreds (or even thousands) of his readers always check sources and they remember what they read. Keene should have known that he wouldn't get away with it.

A few years back Raymondo featured very regularly in the pages of Private Eye, who showed their complete lack of respect for England's greatest ever chess plagiarist (surely 'impressario'? Ed.) by calling him 'The Penguin'. It should be noted that many of the allegations against Raymondo were a lot more serious than mere plagiarising (to which he could hardly plead 'not guilty' with a straight face).

Winter has some interesting things to say about Keene here:

GP,
you might want to mention the S&BCC blog got there a couple of weeks before Private Eye

btw:
Raymondo, for all his faults, has at least not threatened to sue us (S&BCC blog) unlike some other grandmaster I could name.

Indeed, RDK being a former Streatham & Brixton player has contacted our blog with a rather pleasant offer.

Hi

Hope to post later tonight, in about 1 hour. Will add link to your site.

I'm not a Ray Keene basher, he has never done me any harm.
Anytime chess is in the news I usually use and have some fun with it.

Maybe a movie producer could offer Raymondo the part of the Penguin in the next Batman movie. Ray --- er, the Penguin could devise a diabolical chess-related trap for Batman. And if Batman messes up his chess analysis, he's doomed, DOOMED, I say!!!

Enjoyed the latest Cornered article. Re the credit crisis, chess clocks seem to be running faster now, too. :'(
