Game 849557

Well played, RBHILL!

You hoped you had a draw; I'm glad you found the win.

I think it was in this position (after White's 53rd) that you said you thought you could draw. You under-estimated your chances; your position was winning!

Of course, you discovered that yourself. Nice going.

true, but the knight can't get to f4 from d6 in one move.

At move 57 the knight was at d6. How does it get to f4 on the next move?

Spiffy queen-fork of knight and king by R.B. near the end.

I don't understand.

I must guess you mean 58...Nf5+, but 58...Nf5 is not check, and would be met by 59. Kxf5.
If that's not what you mean, let me know. But 58. Nf4+ is not a legal move in the game.

However, even if it can be shown that a draw could be forced from move 58, it wouldn't mean the position after White's 53rd was not winning for White. It would mean White's game had deteriorated between move 53 and move 58.

The game can't be drawn because the knight can't control any of the squares in front of the pawn (except the h8 square, on which the knight would be doomed to capture by the king). The a-pawn was the key, it kept black's knight tied up and pulled black's king away from the marching h-pawn. Very nicely played!

Although, if black played 61 Nd6+ and then moved the knight closer to his king after, he could have made it tougher to force the win.

Too bad the Knight couldn't move there...were you just trying to freak out the 1800 player that lost?

they say "you shouldn't let the truth get in the way of a good story" ... here the story seems to have almost gotten in the way of a good truth!

25... b5 might have been better than 25... b6, since it wouldn't have allowed White's knight to fork the a and b pawns on the next move. Ah, hindsight!
