FICS paired with free yet powerful Babas Chess interface (super fast, chat windows, includes analyzing engine, you can store your games etc.)

Do you think they cheat even in blitz games ? They wouldn't have much time to do it, would they ? Of course ICC is better but he asked for free site.

Another good is italian www.schacchisti.it, very, VERY crowded. Got the link from my cousin's trainer who is an IM

...YES! even in 5min they cheat when you know they are using a program you can just play anti-computer chess play fast and win on time....some players tell you at the start that they are using a program...or you can play 3min chess the machine-heads dont seem to like that time limit.

I would definatly pay $30 and join the ICC. You will learn more there through a few longer games, (say 45 min +) than you will learn all year here. Also, you dont have to worry about engines; every player is checked, regardless of rating.

I don't think that should concern any sub-2000 rated player. and I think 5 of 10 seems pretty harsh, but not that I know the "real" stats. what is your handle there?

I subscribed to ICC for 6months to have a nice site to play real time on. I found the skill level of ICC players to be very good. Cheating is always a possibility but its pretty obvious who cheats when they take long in the opening.

The value of ICC vs FICS (I've used both), is greater despite the fee IMO. For example, some of the instructional videos like the extensive one on the Marshall Gambit was worth the subcription fee alone! I have also taken lessons from titled players there and I found it both convenient and relatively cheap. Simul's, watching GM games, coverage of major worldwide tournaments, the list goes on.

If you want the best and always want to be connected to the latest and greatest in the chess world, ICC is the way to go. I can see myself renewing for a year when my 6month subcription expires.

playchess.com was also good but my free 1-year subcription expired! Cool thing was that it integrated directly with chessbase.

Is it true? I thought the problem with FICS is a lack of people to play with like on ICC.

Ha ! Not too many cheaters on my level on FICS. That's good side of sucking at blitz 😛
