When at work I play at pogo, because they are just a bit better than yahoo (which isn't saying much at all) and I can get it through my firewall. At home I only use FICS. I have used playchess before, and it is great, but it costs money. The only site I have ever paid to play at is RHP (which I plan to renew my subscription soon).
EDIT- Playchess was free for a year with Fritz8, I think it comes with almost all of the chessbase software.
internet chess club (ICC) is the main site for real time play, this is where all the best players play but it's a subscription site. it does have a huge wealth of options

Zone is kindve messed up, A bunch of retarts kids in there untill you play awhile and get in the "real players" circle, Then its fun, with some wonderful people there
