Does Silman make you think or what?
Finished the first 10 problems and wow! His solutions are indepth, lots of words.
I borrowed Reassess Your Chess from the library several years ago and then again from the club couple of years back and it was an eye opener. Such a great book, read about 230 pages then had to return it. I'll have to borrow and read it again after I'm done with the workbook.
So far, from the 10 problems I have learnt:
1.Don't develop pieces mindlessly in the opening. Move pieces twice if you have to in the opening, as long as they go to the right square and fit the plan.
2.Create an imbalance and then nurture it and make it superior to your opponents imbalance.
Anyone else read and solve the workbook questions?

No...but what's this chess teacher thing you are doing?
How to get to 1400, 1600, 1800.
Studying master games, Best way of studying master games, etc... Tons of them there.
Personal Lessons -> I charge, in person or at Fics. Lessons catered to the individual.
Questions?

Fics?....any on-line lessons?....
What repertoire do you play?...(which is usually what "teachers" push onto there students because it's what they know.
Very similar to ICC but it's Free. ICC and Fics were one, then ICC got greedy, split and started charging.
I do some lessons in person and then online for convience.
Openings, I do not push on my students. As long as they know the basic, I'm happy. I do not think it's huge at this point. Plus I don't like studying openings to much either. Not worth it right now.
I show them a few, let them pick what they like and then help them out with it.
Then we start on checkmates, tactics, tactics! endgames, go over games etc...
I think you'll find lots of people are willing to teach live for free, I think he's too busy now, but Bedlam once did, and I will for anybody on PC or FICS or RHP (Though for RHP I only do that for subs). As for the repertoire, I think a good teacher basically lets the student choose the rep. and then helps him/her perfect it.
Some people will analyze a lost game for you if you ask them.
I'm reading Jeremy Silman - The Amateur's Mind and it has some emphasis on creating an imbalance then taking advantage of it. Creating the imbalance in no big thing. Actually manipulating it is the hard part heh. The book so far is over my head and I'm not even finished with the first chapter. Maybe it will start making more sense and I can start using the imbalances in the games. Reassess your chess with the workbook should be here next week.
Originally posted by chessisvanityIt's $30 a year, i.e. if you can afford a comp. you can afford a subscription to RHP. I support Russ and Chris because this is the best CC site on the web, so I'll teach anybody via RHP if they sub. and can learn from me, if you're under 1500 I'll be happy to teach what I can. I don't support the PC system as much because their ducat scam ticks me off, so I don't care if you sub. or just use the free trial there.
Subscribing is one payment for life?

The last chess book I bought was the workbook and so far I haven't spent a lot of time with it but I really got the impression that before I get into it too far I should take a break from playing and start rethinking everything. I'll take another look at it later tonight. I've only had it for about two or three weeks.

Just jump in. I can't believe how great it is.
The first time I read the book, it was over my head. But now couple years later, chess makes a bit more sense and it should help me out a lot more.
I will read the book after I get the workbook done.

It won't change anything, you just get the added star and features!
