When I enter RHP, I usually have a look to the recent checkmates on the starting page, whether I see something interestingly or funny. This time I came across this game:
    Game 5701805.

Not only that a checkmate with knight and bishop is quite rare (I never faced one), have a look at the halfmoves since last capture/pawn moves.

Clearly someone didn't know their rights. It isn't easy to do the B+N ending, so kudos for the finish (eventually) 🙂

    Really, the draw rule is:

No piece capture or pawn movement has occurred for over 50 consecutive moves (100 half moves). Therefore the game has not progressed and a draw may be claimed by either player during their next move.

So I reckon that was done just in the limit (on the 100th half move) - nothing beats perfect timing!

The truly bizarre thing is that White PROMOTED into that knight and bishop. Somebody wanted their endgame practice!

Zenic and these Bishop and Knight mates.

Here is the fabric of somethng I posted in October 2010.

Zenic has had some drama's with this pure KBN v K ending.

Dates refer to the time when the last move was made.

June 2008 Game 4930810 Zenic wins. He knows how to do this.

    Here:

He knows he has to chase the King to corner controlled by Bishop.

20 nigh perfect moves later he mates. That was in 2008.

Why did he take so long in 2012?
In the posted game Zenic may have been having a laugh, a joke.
So he could mate on the 50th move. (see below where this came unstuck.)

Nov 2009 Game 6631710 Zenic is on the wrong end of this ending
and losses but it takes buterflyking 67 moves. Zenic does not claim the draw.

Dec 2009 Game 6062953 Zenic wins a KBN ending.

Jan 2010 Game 5706135 Zenic wins a KNB ending.

Feb 2010 Game 5720194 Zenic wins a KNB ending.

    However this is odd.

in Nov 2009 Game 6410293 Zenic suddenly forgot how to do it.
(despite doing it in June 2008 and July 2009)
Zenic wanders about for 89 moves and then with just one move from mate.

    pint o guinness - Zenic

White's in check and after 154.Kh1 Bd5 is mate.
White must have been waiting for this moment because he suddenly hits the claim draw button
Possibly Zenic was going for the 50 move mate as above in the OP's posted game.

Having said that the lad has over 600 games on the go.
To actually remember the game where you intend to faff about for 30 odd
moves to mate on move 50 is quite a feat.

I don't have any problem with Zenic. He has paid his sub and is getting his
money's worth. Perhaps he is coaching and has given the user details to his class.
That would explain why sometimes he struggles to mate with KBN.

if you look at the games he heads for them as if saying "OK your turn to mate with a KBN."

    Very interesting analysis!

My good friend Anthea Carson has had B+N+K vs K come up three times in OTB USCF encounters (not purposely under promoting, or anything like that).

One time I was in Reno, and NM Tyler Hughes had an opponent who got him into this endgame with the B+N versus bare king.

Unfortunately for Tyler this was one of the last tournaments that still did adjournments. So his opponent had time to go learn the endgame, come back to the board, and finish him off.

I'd say the most logical explanation is that he's just moving pixels, and on to the next one.

I wonder how strong he'd be if he limited himself to say, 10 games at a time. Def highter than 1400's. Dude has more mates than Newt Gengrich.
