Thought I'd indulge in some nostalgia by showing some games from an old Reinfeld book.
The book is more for beginners. A stronger player will smirk at some of the examples, with many weak moves made by the losing side. However, when you first start out, you must learn how to punish these kinds of moves.
The header is written by Reinfeld. Game comments are mine.
Black's mistakes: Black chooses the constricting 3...d6? instead of 3...Bc5! and repeats the error with 4...Nge7? instead of 4...Nf6!
White's refutation: White starts an immediate attack to exploit Black's inferior development.
Black's mistakes: Black loses valuable time with his premature Queen moves. Then he increases White's lead in development with the faulty exchange 7...BxN?
White's refutation: White lays a deep plan to entice the Black Queen far from the scene of action, starting with 10.a3!
The first part of Reinfeld's summary completely misses the boat. Black's real mistake in this game is that he castles on the wrong side of the board. But the game still has immense educational value.
Good Old Fred.
I have a dozen or so of his books. When stuck for a space filler in the blog I look
at one and see if anyone here has fallen for a trick/trap he mentions. Very often
I've found at least one. In some cases quote a few examples.
I have a friend who thought it would be fun to try and collect all the Reinfeld books.
He was up to 50 odd when he discovered Fred also wrote books on coin collecting
and astronomy as well as ghost writing and books under another name.
Considering he wrote so many books (over 100) He passed away quite young (54) in 1964.
