    "The Great Chess Masters and Their Games," aka "The Human Side of Chess," deals mostly with the personalities and struggles of the great players, not so much with specific moves, and as such it fills a gap, and does so effectively.

    The alternate title is given on the dust jacket of my copy, so the reader has fair warning if he or she already owns this book. And the descriptive notation is not a problem for me: I grew up with it; it's my native "language."

    As for Reinfeld's books of instruction, I think he did a fine job of explaining concepts in common sense terms, without being so mysterious or "profound" that the novice is left bewildered.
