I was going over a game with a 1400 opponent in Fritz, when i noticed he had left a rook hanging and i blithely went on with my "plan" to crash through with my pawns on the kingside. On the next mov ...[text shortened]... od player at blitz adjusts quickly to circumstances. Apparently, i have trouble doing that.
I have the same problem, I'm a terrible blitz player

Try decreasing the time controls to 1/0. Seriously, my play at 5/0 and 3/0 improved dramatically after I started playing a lot of 1/0 games. As soon as you start getting the hang of how fast you must play at 1/0, playing at any higher time setting makes you feel like you have all the time in the world, and you'll make far fewer mistakes.
