Hi Russ and all,

Last week, I purchased Shredder 8.

Along with the engines, comes a host of other features, including a database of 500,000 games, and an extensive database of openings and various replies etc.

Anyway...

RHP terms of service strictly forbids the use of chess software during a game, although consultation of opening books and databases are allowed.

Apologies in advance if this sounds like a stupid question, but I'd appreciate clarification as to whether it's acceptable to consult the database and opening book, which came with my software?

I don't want to fall foul of any rules, nor upset anyone, so thanks in advance for clarification.

Warm regards to everyone,

Mark

My interpretation of those rules is the following:

You are allowed to do research on chess, to learn more openings, or to see some good setups.

You aren't allowed, however, to use a chess program, to enact the current game you are playing, with the purpose of the computer giving you a "best" answer.

I guess bbarr wants to say there's no way to detect if someone is using chess aids.
So what is done on this site to see if someone is using some chess engine while playing?

Actually, I wasn't saying anything about this topic. Back when the forums were initially put together, several of us started posting messages in high numbered threads. If you look in your URL box, you'll see that this thread has the number 10,000. That means that this is the 10,000th thread to be created. Before Russ fixed the problem, you could have substituted the number 20,000 for 10,000 in the URL above, and have started posting in a new thread. The thread wouldn't appear until it's actual turn on the list. When I said "catch me if you can" I was referring to the race among players here (Royal Chicken, Acolyte, Lioness, etc) to see how high up the thread numbering system went. My post and Lioness's post just appeared at the top of this thread because we had left these posts under the thread number 10,000 a couple years ago (check the date of our posts). Incidentally, this is why this thread is listed as having 4 posts in it total, even though there are actually 6. My post and Lioness's were just waiting in this thread until someone clicked "New Thread" for the 10,000th time.

You and Acolyte instigated the whole thing, if I remember correctly. I think you still have some posts in the negatively numbered threads. 😲

No, I'm afraid I had nothing to do with it. Acolyte is the sole instigator I think; I had just joined RHP when the Crazy Cantabrigian went on a tear.

I assume you are talking about the reference here:

Simple answer, yes you can use the database. You just can't use the analysis function.
