Can somebody explain the difference between Chessbase 9 and Fritz 9? I've seen Fritz, but not Chessbase. From what I've read, Fritz is a "playing" program and Chessbase is a "database" program, but I don't understand how they are different. Both let you play an engine, both have a database, and both let you play online, correct?

Chessbase 9 is mainly a database program and has a lot more features then fritz 9. It also cost more but chessbase 9 comes with fritz 9 in it already I belive.

Basically if you want to play and analyse then get Fritz, if you want to store games and analyse db data, check out openings, etc, get Chessbase.

Does Chessbase 8 come with Fritz 8? Our club computer has Chessbase 8 and fritz is part of it, unless if they bought 2 different cd's. I don't think they did though.

Right, It contains Fritz 5.32 and Crafty.

Fritz is like 1/6 the cost.
$300 is for the megapackage; the full-featured CB 9 is $150. For the extra $150 you get several more issues of ChessBase magazine, and annotated games. They both come with a database of 2.7+ million games, but the mega version has 1000s of the games annotated.
Fritz 9 is a playing program, and does auto-annotations. It has limited database features. You can run Fritz 9 as an analysis engine in CB 9, but you cannot play against it there.
All of the above is also true of CB 8 and Fritz 8. They are sold separately. Fritz 5.32 came packaged in my version of CB 8, as well as Crafty and a couple other engines. I've downloaded others from the ChessBase website (free).

Fritz is an engine and training program.
Chessbase is a database game editor program.
That is how the programs started, although today they both have many overlapping features.
Basically Fritz evolved to have basic game editing and database capabilities.
Chessbase has evolved to have basic playing and training functionality.
Unless you are really trying to play chess at a professional level, Fritz 9 is more than adequate in its database functions, and the training functions are really cool.
Although I dont think that chessbase has the training functions, check training, defense training, attack training, that Fritz has so they are both supersets, if you will.
