There is famous Capablanca game where he sacs pawns with
check in the ending just to promote one pawn. I sac 4 pawns.
Greenpawn34 - KellyJay, RHP 2017
1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 exd4 4. Nxd4 Nxd4 {This is the variation Kelly Jay was recently fond of playing. I don't like it at all and neither does Scotch Theory.} 5. Qxd4 {I now have the whole centre of the board.} 5... d6 {A few of KJ's opponents here played 6.Be2 and 0-0 which is too feeble for me.} 6. Nc3 Nf6 7. Bg5 Be7 8. O-O-O O-O 9. e5 {Still theory but not too sure if it's best. 9.f4, 9.Bc4 or even 9.h4 are possibly better.} 9... dxe5 10. Qxe5 {First wee hurdle Black has to find an only move here. That is why I went this way. I like making players jump hurdles.} 10... Bd6 {Damn! He jumped it. Anything else gives me a very good position. So now I go for a wee trap.} 11. Bxf6 {If Black takes my Queen first 11....Bxe5 12.Bxd8 White comes out of it a piece up.} 11... Qxf6 {Damn! he never went for that one either.} 12. Qxf6 gxf6 {I've got a doubled on f6 out of the opening. (big deal) Black has the two Bishops. I need him to make a mistake.} 13. g3 {A wee crafty move. It stops a future Bf4+ and if he wants to play c6 so the my Bishop on g2 bites granite his d6 Bishop hangs.} 13... Be7 {That is wrong. 13....Bg4 developing with a gain of time. Black played this because he is expecting Bg2 and wants to play c6.} 14. Bc4 {The obvious looking 14.Nd5 meets 14...Bd8,} 14... Be6 {He wants me to undouble his pawns.} 15. Rhe1 {No. I like this is better.} 15... Bb4 {I did not consider this but still felt it OK. I'm getting active Rooks.} 16. Bxe6 Bxc3 {Here the pawn steal, 17.Bxf7+ brings the Rook to the 7th. I think this way....} 17. bxc3 fxe6 18. Rxe6 Rf7 {....gives me a tempo.} 19. Rd4 {With an idea about dancing the Rook along the 4th rank creating weakness'.} 19... c5 {Not sure about that one. 19....Kf8 looked better.} 20. Rd5 b6 {Let's get rid of my isolated pawn and at the same time create a target.} 21. a4 Kf8 22. a5 Rb8 23. axb6 axb6 24. Rdd6 {This wins another pawns.} 24... Kg7 {If he pushes the b-pawn I take on f6 and have a passed and soon to be protected f-pawn.} 25. Rxb6 Rxb6 {I was glad to see that instead of 25...Ra1. I did not fancy playing a double rook ending.} 26. Rxb6 Rc7 {Now I had a think and came up with plan a.} 27. Rd6 {I'm going to cut the King off from the c-pawn and hopefully keep it stuck in that quarter of the board.} 27... Kg6 28. Rd5 {I have to keep the King from getting active.} 28... c4 29. Kd2 {Here comes my King.} 29... h5 30. Ke3 Re7+ {A big decision here. But it keeps to my plan of my active King v his bad King.} 31. Kd4 Re2 {His Rook now has a feast on my pawns.} 32. Kxc4 Rxc2 {I can save two of my kingside pawns with 33. Rd3 and 34. h4 but ...} 33. Kb3 {Clearing the path of the c-pawn with a tempo was too tempting.} 33... Rxf2 34. c4 {Run!} 34... Rxh2 35. c5 {Run faster!} 35... Rh3 {I was a wee bit worried about him not chasing the 4th pawn Then the win becomes much more tricky. (if indeed there is one).} 36. c6 {Run!} 36... Rxg3+ 37. Kc2 {Now Black probably saw both 37...Re3 and 37...Ra3 let me queen with c7 and Rd8,} 37... Rg2+ 38. Rd2 {Obviously Black cannot trade Rooks as the c-pawn promotes.} 38... Rg5 39. Rd3 {To get behind the pawn.} 39... Rg2+ 40. Kb3 {I was pleased when I found this a few moves back. It stops Ra2} 40... Rg5 41. c7 {Run!} 41... Rc5 42. Rc3 Rxc7 {Forced.} 43. Rxc7 $220 {I had no need to work out a win if Black just runs the h-pawn with King protection. I know a few endgame tricks. Black has two pawns.- see next diagram.} 43... h4 44. Kc2 {Now my King gets across to Kingside in plenty of time.} 44... f5 45. Kd2 Kg5 46. Ke2 Kg4 47. Kf2 h3 48. Rh7 f4 {Now mark time to reach Zugzwang.} 49. Rh8 f3 50. Rh7 {Black resigned.} *
I was talking about Black having an advanced King’s Rook pawn and saying
it was no good as a drawing device if there were other pawns on the board.
This is a draw. But in the game Black had two pawns
This is a win. 1.Kf3 f5 2. Ra2 and mate next move.
