Have been considering using books and taking time over my moves in order to improve my rating, which seems to be stuck at 1600-1650 in perpetuity.
With all the bannings and accusations flying around, I don't think I'll bother.
On a side note, I am now officially better than Nordlys by 4 points. Ha!

Many users will make a strange move just to get you out of data. Chances are you will be out of data in most games by move 10 or so... perhaps a bit (or a lot) deeper if the other user is also using data.
Some games can go Data all the way through... but why anyone would bother to do that is beyond my reasoning.
I don't think you using data is going to rocket you to the point where flags will fly... It's not like you are losing your games in the opening anyway, is it?

I understand your feelings about improving. I realized a while ago that just the fact that I have a rating around 1600 after playing for less than a year might be suspicious to some (to my knowledge, nobody has accused me of cheating yet, but it wouldn't surprise me anymore). I didn't worry about that until recently, as I thought that an investigation would easily show that I don't cheat. Now I am not so sure about anything anymore. I know the game mods are doing their best, but I just find it hard to trust their judgement completely.
Considering that my improvement until now is already suspicious, I probably shouldn't stop there, though. That might look even more suspicious. 😉
