I don't respond to 1.e4 with 1...e5, but I did run across this idea, and this gambit certainly seems interesting. It starts 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nd4!? and if 4.Nxe5? then 4...Qg5! is pretty painful for white.

Anybody have any experience with it?

Only in blitz. I've never gone for the pawn so I can't really comment on the accepted gambit. Nxd4 though is not so pretty for black.

Yeah, from what I hear Nxd4 is pretty good for white - like I said, I don't use it as black, so I'm no expert, but it seems reasonably ok for black.

If white doesn't fall for it then he's just better.

Really - have you studied it extensively?

No, I just rely on the judgement of a British fidemaster who writes a lot of books. You may have of heard of him.

He holds the records for the most games played one after another.

I think he's wrong (In principle..). 🙂

White might be better, sure, but that doesn't mean that white won't get totally confused in the ensuing moves.

Isn't white just two tempi up (counting the first move tempi.

It's not as simple as that at all - things can get confusing.

What happens when white counters with 5. Bxf7+ suddenly the black king is forced to move.

Is this opening worth the lack of King safety?

1.e4 e5 Nf3 Nc6 Bc4 Nd4

a) Nxe5 Qg5 is good for black.

However.

B) Nxd4 exd4 is good for white.
