these are the two openings i use a lot in my chess. i was wondering if anyone has any pros/cons of each. please dont provide me with any examples, i know how to apply the openings. All i ask is that if some one could briefly tell me what they think of them, for example, if it halts development, etc. thank you
I play d4 as white aiming for a Queen's Gambit Declined, either the Orthodox or maybe the 5. Bf4 variation. The Orthodox tends to very positional games. The Bf4 variation tends to remain complex for longer and it avoids the Tartakower and Lasker systems.
I haven't had much experience with the Scotch Game. I've played the Scotch Gambit a few times with some success. It seems to lead to double edged games with a single mistake often deciding the game.
I just started playing the Scotch a short while ago. I was looking for a more aggressive opening after playing the QGD pretty much since I took the game back up a couple years ago. Like any of the popular openings it's a style thing. The Scotch seems much easier to learn though. I don't relish the thought of playing against 4...Qh4, though no one has played this against me yet. Does anyone have thoughts on this?
Originally posted by SkorjAs it happens, the Fritz vs RHP game has turned into a 4... Qh4 scotch game so you might want to pop into that thread. And it's been my experience on RHP that you don't really need to prepare for it, I've played a dozen scotch games as white on this site (I play it whenever I get the chance, love the opening) and without fail every time I play it they play 4... Nxd4 instead.

Originally posted by shortgoth1I normally play QG but have made a new years resolution to quit d4 and play e4, after all Bobby liked it. I am following the Scotch Fritz game with interest and am starting to play it in blitz.

Shortgoth knows his Scotch though - Qh4 as predicted! Mightily impressed 😀
