I play the Sicilian Defense alot as Black. Is this really the most effective way to combat the Sicilian?

? Most effective is always mainline.

Wrong.

No it isn't. The Sicilian mainline scores sligtly better than the Alapin.

Also, if you think it's wrong, it would be far more useful to explain WHY.

2. Na3 scores better than any other move in the Sicilian. That must be the best response.

Again, I have to comment. I should save this post to my computer, so that I can re-use it.

Just because a move scores better doesn't make it better.

Particularly when we are talking about the 2nd move of the game.

1. g4 wins 62% of the time. 1. e4 wins 37.1% of the time. Does that mean that 1. g4 is a better move than 1. e4?

I'll give you a break because you're new here. I'm Xanthos and occasionally I am ever so slightly sarcastic.

Any system that you understand throughly is better than one you don't understand. Or so I'm told, my scores indicate that I don't understand too much at all.

Sorry, Xanthos. I think I saw the sarcasm, but wasn't sure if everyone else did.

This database winning percentage rating thing is endemic on the sight.

I keep hearing and seeing references to you.

I hope to get to play you at some point.

Don't be a fool. When I write "scores better" I take into consideration ELO as well as sample size.

Prove to me 1. g4 isn't as good. Just curious; just because it is not played often why does that immediatly make it a bad move?

A decent amount of chess knowledge and experience should tell you that it is not the most principled/logical move if White intends to have an opening advantage.

So you are claiming that the mainline is always the best response to any opening?

No, I was only referring to the Sicilian mainline. However, in general, the mainline of an opening tends to be best.

How are you deciding what is the best response?
