i am just starting out can someone please reccomend some books which might be of assistance to me

There are plenty of good books to find, but here is another site that may seem elementary to you... but check it all out, if you know it all you know the basics and can start getting into some winning positions.

You should get books by Yasser Seirawan such as Winning Chess Play or Winning Chess Openings...many people will tell you that you shouldn't spend much time learning openings when you are starting out but I think it was a big help for me...no reason to develop bad habits which immediately ruin your game in the first few moves

Try, "Logical Chess: Move by Move" by Irving Chernev.

Book is basically a collection of games, where the motive behind each move is explained. You will find it instructive to play through the games and consider the commentary.

How do I change me status to away on Vacation so my oponents don't claim timeouts and such. Thanks.
