Anyone looking for a protege?

I'm a chess student just getting back into playing after a long seven years off (I'm now 18.) I'm getting pretty serious about playing chess again, so I thought I would check out anyone who wanted a student to teach. I've been reading tactic and opening books, but I feel a teacher and mentor would give me a much better education on the game.

Thanks.

Are you any good?

I'm not bad, hence I need a teacher. I'm ranked about 1340 on most sites. Considering I just started playing again a month ago I don't think that's too horrible.

A teacher would help, of course, but you can still make big leaps on your own.

Get your hands on a good book or two, and try to play opponents above (but not too far above) your level. Above all, stick to the much more enjoyable tactics and, besides the basic principles, leave the opening study for much later.

P.S. If you're really nice, perhaps Bowmann will deign to drop you a hint or two. His words are worth their weight in pond scum.

If you can join a chess club that would be great or play in OTB tournaments. I was around the same 1300 rating or so online and after a year of OTB i'm at 1720. Trying to make it on the top 20 list for my city. A teacher would help you get better quicker but there's always money involved.

Buy Yasser Seirawans' books! I haven't read other ones (but I've heard they're equally good) so I'd start out with Winning Chess Tactics. It should be useful for people with ratings from 100- 2000. It's $9.95 used here: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1857443330/qid=1116803654/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/002-2529640-6583232 (and why not buy used?) Good luck with your chess, I look foward to seeing a protege such as yourself playing world championship matches with Sergey in a few years 😉

i read all of yasser seirwans books except winning chess brillancy... they're really good. i would say its more like 0-1800 though except the harder tactics at the end of this tactics books.

If you can buy chessmaster10000 then that would help losts. they have lots of tutorials, drills, quizes, and lecture games. I really find them helpful. Its a great program to learn from.

Indeed, I actually just ordered 8000 (probably not as amazing as 10000 I'm sure, but something to get me by.)

What are the main differences between the two? I think I remember something about the new one having a blunder alert, and some other novelty features.

the 8000 one i had was um... not a cd version so i didn't get a chance to use it to much. 10000 has more lectures and drills, more personalities to play against, 100 points stronger at least. It also allows you to play simulations exhibitions. I tried playing 4 personalities at the same time and that went okay. It also has a lot more pre defined tournaments already set up for you. You just enter and start playing in the tourney. Thats about all i can remeber.
