Any of you U.S. players out there who get Chess Life (the USCF) publication, be sure and read the articles by IM Tim Taylor and his Hungarian Adventure traveling to Budapest and attempting to get his GM norm. In this goal he fails miserably, but meets interesting personalities, like his pickup sweetheart, the local Tatjana and plays some horrible and wonderful games along the way. "Tatjana slammed me up against the wall. 'Why you play bad chess?' she demanded." Be sure and play through his game against GM George Greigore, in which Tim suddenly reaquires his "mojo" in an instructive and sacrificial black side of queen's gambit. Here we see something rare: second echelon chessplayers fighting trench warfare in a foreign country, not making enough money for meals, but still revelling in the struggle over the chessboard. Great stuff!
I looked into the article a little bit through google and stumbled across this webpage which seems to disagree with you. I am not what you are seeing in the article that this person did not (or vice versa) but here is the link if anyone wants to look over it for themselves.

Yea, I just read the Sam Sloan critique of the article. I was astonished. Are we to believe that chess players don't have sex? That it's not part of their lives. That we are not allowed to write about it as part of a "Hungarian Adventure" article? I wasn't even aware there was a controversy until this Sloan critique was brought to my attention by a poster above. When Chess Life finally gets some guts, somebody has to pop up and complain about it. It IS Chess Life, by the way, and all this stuff is part of Chess Life so why not write about it. Incidentally, there is nothing explicit in the article, so don't get the idea it's porn or anything. Just a lonely guy who loves chess stuck in a country trying to get his GM norm and failing miserable, but having some adventures along the way.
