Uhhh, she's that good. i am however unclear by what is loosely categorized as calculations here. i'm thinking that means all moves on the board for the first ply and then all continuations and so on and so forth, until you see a line with some bite to it. Bleh.

If she says that then she is an out and out liar. You don't become among the top players in the world without calculation. Pattern recognition is certainly a tool but it doesn't work in all situations.
I bet her caculations are subconscious though, My 6 year old sister caculates a long time just to figure out a pin, whereas I dont even caculate (consciously) the pin

Heh, I buy chess videos on specific opening variations. When you do that you get some really good stuff that nobody else knows about. One GM was showing a game between Judith and another Grandmaster. He took the postion from the game and showed where Judith, as White could have played a forcing continuation, but after 12 moves the game should end up in a draw BECAUSE Black had ...b5! at the end of the line.

So what does our darling do in the game? She doesn't play into the line... she plays a4! which threatens to go into the line with a winning endgame!
<GASP!>

The fact is that she didn't even know the line! But she analyzed it out and saw that Black would equalize after 12 moves with ..b5. Which is why she played a4!

Some other commentators (during the game) were horrified with the move. That's because they didnt understand the position.

But very much like Annabel Chong, only in a different arena.

(sorry for dragging this into the gutter - I'm still horrified by the documentary that was shown about Ms Chong a few years ago though and this tale of such volume of activity in a short time caused flashbacks...).

On the Chess sside of this discussion, she must calculate, no-one could play that quickly and be that good without calculation (just ask Helden๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜›๐Ÿ˜‰) - only joking Helden...

Try "Play Like A Grandmaster" and "Think Like a Grandmaster", although "Play..." is the one that lays out the variation analysis.
